A priest says that people are starving to death in Cabo Delgado and says that “it gets to the point of trying to eat the grass”. Father Manuel Faria coordinates the missionary team of the Archdiocese of Braga in the diocese of Pemba and speaks of “a distressing reality” in the region.
“Every day we see cases of orphaned babies because the mother couldn’t cope. Some children can’t cope and die malnourished,” says Father Manuel, describing a scenario of enormous fragility, hunger, and suffering in Cabo Delgado that was aggravated by the passage of Cyclone Chido on December 15.
