More than 7,000 families living in the Massingir district, in Gaza province, in southern Mozambique, have been affected by drought in recent years, which has led to a food crisis. According to the local authorities, the situation is linked to the El Niño weather phenomenon that is being felt in several African countries.
The district administrator, Esmeralda Mutemba, revealed that the communities are also facing the problem of crops being destroyed by wild animals and the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease, which has affected livestock. “The multiple crises affecting Mozambique – conflict, drought, and public health emergencies – are putting a strain on humanitarian resources. Around 4.8 million people require humanitarian assistance (10% are people with disability), including 3.4 million children,” she said.
