The President of the Republic of Mozambique, Daniel Chapo, met with the Executive Director of the Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) and Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations, Winnie Byanyima, to discuss progress and challenges in the fight against HIV in the country. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the African Union Summit of Heads of State and Government in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. It highlighted the need to strengthen efforts in the face of changes in international funding.
According to Winnie Byanyima, Mozambique has made “a lot of progress, reducing new infections and reducing deaths.” However, the country still faces a major challenge, since “Mozambique has two million people who are on treatment, 400,000 still to be taken to treatment, 80,000 new infections every year, so it’s still growing”. Official figures indicate that 2.4 million people are living with HIV in the country, reinforcing the importance of continued access to treatment. Despite the challenges, the determination of the Mozambican government and the partnership with international organizations signal a solid commitment to containing the epidemic.
