Authorities helped almost 1,100 girl in child marriages in Mozambique

The Mozambican authorities helped 1,099 children victims of child marriage to return to their families or be placed in “alternative protection” in 2024, according to official figures.

Nampula province, in northern Mozambique, had 331 children removed from these forced marriages, followed by Manica and Zambézia, both in the center, with 176 and 175 respectively. 803 girls who were victims of child marriage were also reintegrated into school. These marriages are usually negotiated by families and used as a strategy to escape poverty, especially in rural areas.
