The Mozambique LNG project, operated by TotalEnergies, exemplifies how private sector engagement can drive meaningful change in biodiversity conservation. Despite the project’s force majeure status, its biodiversity programmes have remained active, delivering measurable impact through community engagement and scientific partnerships.
One of the flagship initiatives is the mangrove restoration programme in Palma district, launched in 2022 in partnership with Eden Reforestation Association. Over 11 million mangrove seedlings have been planted across 1,300 hectares, protecting against coastal erosion and creating nurseries for marine life. The effort is aligned with Mozambique’s National Mangrove Management Action Plan (2021–2030) and has already created around 300 local jobs, demonstrating the intersection of ecological restoration and socioeconomic development.
