Mozambique: More than two thousand girls rescued from child marriages since 2019

At least 2,259 girls have been rescued from child marriages and reintegrated into school in Mozambique since 2019, when legislation against the phenomenon was strengthened, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) said today.

According to official figures for 2022, one in two girls was “married” before the age of 18, corresponding to 4.3 million girls, and one in eight before the age of 15, corresponding to one million girls, in a country currently home to more than 30 million people.
