At least 159 people died, and 109 were rescued in 38 shipwrecks in Mozambique in 2024, the maritime transport regulatory authority said, pointing to the occurrence of more cases in wooden and artisanal vessels.
Of the total number of deaths recorded by Itransmar (Institute of Maritime Transportation), 98 died on April 7 last year, in Nampula province, after a fishing boat sank off the administrative post of Lunga, in the district of Mossuril, bound for Ilha de Moçambique.
