Around 13 million Mozambican children, out of more than 16 million, live in poverty, according to a report by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) released this Monday (May 26).
The report shows that child poverty in Mozambique continues to affect an unacceptably high number of girls and boys, with around 77% of children living in poverty – whether monetary, multidimensional, or both. The report points to the crisis caused by hidden debts, the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, and conflict-related factors as some of the factors that have contributed to the increase in monetary poverty among Mozambican children.
