The Mozambican Public Prosecutor’s Office is concerned about the growing number of cases of child marriage. In Zambézia province, for example, 76 cases were recorded in the first three months of this year alone.
Official figures show that Mozambique is among the countries with the highest rates of child marriage, ranking 10th in the world. According to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), around 48.4% of women in Mozambique between the ages of 20 and 24 were married or in a union before the age of 18, and 12.9% before the age of 15.
