The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) estimated that 22.7% of the Mozambican population still practices open defecation, despite the progress made.
According to UNICEF, despite the data, Mozambique has made some progress in eradicating this practice, which is reflected in the declaration that 11 districts have been open-defecation free (ODF) since 2011, to which another has recently been added, Chibabava District, in the central province of Sofala. UNICEF also explains that work is continuing to “ensure that all districts in Mozambique have access to safe sanitation”.
