More than 25,000 people have been forced to flee their homes in recent weeks as a result of growing violence in Cabo Delgado province, in northern Mozambique. The warning comes from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), which points to a worsening humanitarian crisis in the African country.
The region, rich in natural gas, precious stones, and minerals, is the scene of an armed conflict fueled by insurgent and extremist groups, which attack civilians and cause mass displacement. Since the start of the insurgency in 2017, almost 1.3 million Mozambicans have become internally displaced. According to aid workers, the response to the crisis is at its limits. The situation is aggravated by the reduction in international resources, which jeopardizes basic assistance to the affected populations.
