The United Nations (UN) warns that the humanitarian situation in northern Mozambique worsened significantly in April 2025 due to new attacks by armed groups in the provinces of Cabo Delgado and Niassa, with 43,000 displaced.
The new extremist movements in northern Mozambique include Niassa, in the neighboring province of Cabo Delgado, where, since their outbreak on April 29, they have caused at least two deaths: two beheaded forest rangers. According to the UN, the majority of the displaced are women and children, “who face increased risks of gender-based violence, family separation and limited access to essential services”.
