Mozambique: NGO wants to stop British funding of TotalEnergies project

The non-governmental organization Oil Change International (OCI) has called on the UK to reconsider its decision to finance TotalEnergies’ project in Mozambique, alleging violations of human rights and international environmental commitments.

The project of the Area 1 consortium, led by TotalEnergies, is developing the construction of a plant in Afungi, near the district of Palma, for the exploration of natural gas in the Rovuma basin, in Cabo Delgado province, in northern Mozambique. The project, valued at 20 billion dollars overall, has been suspended since 2021 when a force majeure clause was invoked due to attacks attributed to terrorist groups in Cabo Delgado, but the multinational recently announced that it will resume this year.
