Heavy rains in Mozambique may increase disease and affect agriculture

The 2025/2026 rainy season could pose significant risks to public health and agriculture in Mozambique, given above-average rainfall forecasts and the possibility of flooding, especially in the second half of the season.

According to Américo José, head of the Ministry of Health’s Scenario Monitoring and Analysis Department, climate change poses both a direct and indirect threat to the health of the population. José explained that a significant reduction in cases of malaria and diarrhea is expected during the first period of the rainy season, which runs from October to December, compared to last year. However, between January and March, an increase in these cases is expected due to heavier rainfall.
