The National Public Safety Service in Mozambique (SENSAP) found two bodies in an advanced state of decomposition inside a dry well located at a former provincial government construction site, abandoned more than a decade ago in the Nhamdjessa neighborhood of Manica. SENSAP added that a restless snake was found inside the well, which has hampered rescue efforts and raised the possibility that there may be other bodies that have not yet been removed.
The strong odor detected by residents ultimately revealed the presence of several corpses, raising suspicions that a serial killer may have used the space. According to Alberto João, president of the Manica Mototaxi Drivers Association, some of the victims were identified as missing mototaxi drivers.
