Thousands of people have travelled hundreds of kilometers to flee escalating violence in Mozambique, which erupted following October’s disputed presidential election. A recent decision by the country’s constitutional council to uphold the earlier ruling of the electoral commission that declared the ruling Frelimo party’s candidate, Daniel Chappo, the winner has sparked fresh protests.
More than 13, 000 Mozambicans are currently seeking refuge at various camps in neighboring Malawi, according to local authorities. The Malawian government plans to relocate asylum seekers to larger facilities.
