Mozambique: UNHCR concerned about child abduction in Cabo Delgado

Without divulging figures for 2025, Isadora Zoni from UNHCR told DW in an exclusive interview that Ancuabe, Macomia, Mocímboa da Praia, and Muidumbe are the districts that continue to register the highest rates of child abduction in Cabo Delgado province.

This year alone, armed groups have kidnapped at least 120 children, according to the non-governmental organization Kwendeleya, based in Cabo Delgado. Many are taken to be used as child soldiers or for forced marriages. UNHCR also warns that despite the escalation of violence, international attention to the conflict has been decreasing. This trend could compromise the mobilization of crucial resources for the humanitarian response.
