Mozambique’s Minister of Health denounces systematic theft of medicines from hospitals

During a meeting with nurses in Maputo, Mozambique’s Minister of Health, Ussene Isse, was blunt: “A lot of medicine is stolen from hospitals in the country; everything disappears within 15 days of being distributed to the units.” The statement exposes one of the structural weaknesses of the sector, where corruption and misappropriation of resources jeopardize the population’s access to basic treatment.

At least 15 civil servants have been expelled from the state apparatus since January for direct involvement in thefts of medicines from various health facilities.
