The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) said it needs US$7.2 million to support Mozambique following the passage of cyclone Chido. The cyclone mainly affected the province of Cabo Delgado, in the north of Mozambique, about a month ago, causing at least 120 deaths, affecting 450,000 people, and damaging “more than 40 % of local hospitals”, with “more than 12,000 pregnant women losing access to health care”, according to information released by the UN agency.
Recently updated figures from cyclone Chido by the Mozambican authorities show that at least 120 people have died and another 868 have been injured in northern and central Mozambique. Mozambique is considered one of the countries most severely affected by climate change, facing cyclical floods and tropical cyclones during the rainy season, which runs from October to April.
