The 2025 school year in Mozambique starts on February 4 with an estimated 1.6 million new students in the first grade, and the official opening will be next Friday. Although the deadline for enrollment was December 31st, the Ministry of Education and Culture has extended the process, to ensure that no child is left out of the National Education System. By the end of December, 1.1 million children had already been enrolled, corresponding to 68.7 percent of the target.
This school year is starting with difficulties in distributing school books, and some provinces, such as Inhambane, have already received more than 100,000 textbooks. Distribution is underway and more materials are expected to arrive in several regions in the coming weeks, including the districts of Nampula and Tete.
