UNICEF denounces increase in cases of child abduction by non-state armed groups in Mozambique

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) is concerned about the increase in child abductions by non-state armed groups (NSAGs) in the northern Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado.

UNICEF says that “this includes the report of the abduction of seven children in Mocímboa da Praia, in the province of Cabo Delgado, which allegedly took place on January 23 [2025]. UNICEF calls for the immediate release and handover to the civil authorities of the abducted children and for an end to the abduction, recruitment, and use of children, all of which constitute serious violations of children’s rights. Abducted children are often forced into combat and non-combat roles, which puts their safety and well-being at serious risk.”
