Amnesty International called on the Mozambican government to urgently investigate reports of human rights violations during the “repression” of post-election demonstrations, pointing to the “unlawful killings of more than 300 people”.
Amnesty International recalls that the social unrest began after “the assassination of two prominent figures aligned with the opposition”, advisors to presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane, on October 21, 2024, after the general elections on the 9th of the same month. Currently, protests, now on a small scale, have been taking place in different parts of the country, and, in addition to contesting the results, people are complaining about the rising cost of living and other social problems.
