The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has pointed to armed conflicts in Cabo Delgado and natural disasters in Mozambique as factors that increase the risk of early marriages in affected communities.
According to UNICEF, the weak enforcement of laws against these forced unions also contributes to the increase in cases. In 2023 alone, more than six thousand cases of child marriages were reported, four thousand girls were reintegrated into their biological families and 219 girls returned to school. In the first six months of last year alone, the Mozambican authorities helped 616 child victims of child marriages to return to their families or to be placed in alternative care.
