Cyclone Jude: UNICEF warns of risk of disease in children in Mozambique

The passage of tropical cyclone Jude, which has been affecting Mozambique since Monday (March 10), has already caused deaths and injuries in the Mossuril district in Nampula province. According to preliminary figures released by the National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction (INGD), the cyclone destroyed 380 houses and 27 schools in the provinces of Nampula and Zambézia.

According to UNICEF, the passage of Cyclone Jude raises concerns about children’s health because floods increase the risk of diseases such as cholera, diarrhea, and malaria. In addition to widespread damage to infrastructure, flooding, and power cuts, the storm also caused widespread damage to crops. UNICEF also said that the humanitarian response capacities in Mozambique have been overwhelmed following the cyclones of December and January
