According to UNICEF, an estimated 747,000 people, half of them children, are expected to be affected by the effects of the cyclone Jude which hit Mozambique’s northern provinces of Nampula, Niassa, and Zambezia this week. The cyclone caused extensive damage to infrastructure including roads, water and electricity systems, health facilities, and schools. Initial reports suggest that 17,000 children have been cut off from learning, with this figure expected to rise in the coming days.
The scale of the crisis far exceeds current resources in a country where 3.4 million children are already in need of humanitarian assistance, and the current cyclone season is due to last six more weeks. UNICEF calls on donors, governments, and the international community to increase and sustain funding for education and emergency response efforts. Without immediate intervention, the future of an entire generation of Mozambican children is at stake.
