In the district of Boquisso, in the municipality of Matola, in Maputo province, a lobolo (traditional marriage) ceremony involving an 8-year-old child who a 47-year-old adult had sexually abused was interrupted by neighbors of the child’s home. What was supposed to be a cultural celebration turned into resistance in which the community stood up against the abusive and unacceptable practice of child marriage.
After the sexual abuse took place, the perpetrator was arrested and taken to the nearest police station, where he remained for a few hours. However, after his release, the man contacted the victim’s family and offered to formalize the child’s lobolo as a way of paying a “fine”. As the ceremony was about to begin, a group of residents, outraged by the situation, broke into the house and prevented the lobolo from continuing, interrupting what they considered to be a destructive and unacceptable practice.
