Local authorities confirmed on Tuesday that food shortages caused by drought are leading thousands of families in Sofala province, central Mozambique, to eat wild fruits and bran.
Community leader Chatala, in the Caia district, says it’s a phenomenon never seen in the last 30 years: “We’ve been without food for more than two years here in Caia. There’s a lot of hunger, we’ve already had two years without rain, which is why hunger has grown and is getting worse every day.” The National Institute for Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (INGD) and partners have been supporting affected families with food as a way of mitigating hunger in the affected regions of Sofala province.
