The data released by the National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) reveals that, for every ten cases of sexual abuse registered in five municipal districts of Maputo city, seven of the victims are minors.
On average, there is at least one case of sexual abuse a day in the city of Maputo, and every two days, one of the victims is a minor. The municipal districts of “KaMavota and KaMubukwana” recorded the highest number of incidents, with 19 and 12 cases, respectively. The last study carried out by UNICEF in Mozambique in 2019 indicated that one in seven women reported having suffered sexual violence before the age of 18. The figure is higher compared to the global average, which affects one in ten children in the world.
