In Mozambique, “street restaurants” have been gaining prominence in Maputo’s main streets, markets, and avenues because many married, single, widowed, young, and old women find selling meals a source of income to pay their expenses. Women prepare the food at home and transport it in their car to the points of sale on the street, which are preferably located in front of stores or public offices.
“I decided to sell food because I had nothing at home. When I started selling, I was able to support my children. I’ve been able to make a profit of between 800 and sometimes 900 meticais a day when I cook 13 kilos of rice; with the money, we were able to buy food for our children,” said Zinha Antônio, 34 years old and mother of 3 children.
